The question of who is a better producer between Nigerian music maestros Don Jazzy and Young John, is one that despite several attempts, still remains unanswered.
The Nigerian cyber space, specifically on X on Tuesday, got many talking when a yet-to-be-identified user to Afropami sparked controversy in an attempt to compare both Don Jazzy and Young John’s production abilities.
In a trend that has gained lots of attraction on the space, netizens have continued to share their opinion in series of posts that either presents one producer as a better one or presents both of them as equals.
However, a few things remain undisputed about these two personalities. First off, they have both independently laid their respective marks in the Nigerian music space and perhaps, even the global music industry.
While Don Jazzy is widely known to have transited from the art of producing, making beats and singing in his early career days to now owning one of the biggest and most successful record labels in Nigeria, the Marvins, Young John has proven himself to be a force to reckon with in the industry having also transited from just producing songs for artists amd making beats to becoming a successful independent artist with some of the most hit songs in the year 2023 attributed to him.
Young John’s latest comeback to the music scene as a singer, no longer as a producer has been considered very significant and in the same year, placed him almost a close competitor with Asake.
These and several other notable facts about both music professionals are attributes that have over the years, set them apart from the crowd and has today, also sparked arguments and comparisons amongst fans.
Sharing a snippet of Korede Bello’s 2013 hit song “Godwin” which was produced by Don Jazzy, an X user @maneekoficial applauded the Marvins CEO while recollecting some good moments the beats inspired over a decade ago.
@maneekofficial wrote: “Don Jazzy had us playing this beat on the drums that year. I didn’t know that he made it on a computer. No drum set.
“When I look back at those times, I just smile and say, ‘omo, we tried.’ Many of the things we watched Aaron Spears, Tony Royster, and co. play with double pedals, we watched, practiced, and learned with single pedals. When CVI headquarters was beginning to improve, they got a new set with double pedals, and boy, was I fascinated. I enjoyed those days, enjoyed those challenges, and I look forward to playing it again soon. Hopefully 😬”
On their part, @afroconnect opined that Young John despite being talented and skilled, should not be compared with the”veteran” Don Jazzy.
Afroconnect wrote, “Young Jonn is indeed a talented producer with several hit tracks under his belt, showcasing his versatility and skill. However, comparing him to Don Jazzy, who is a veteran in the industry with a vast body of work and influence, might not be entirely fair.
“Both have their own unique styles and contributions to the Nigerian music scene. It’s more about appreciating each artist for their individual talents rather than trying to rank them against each other.”
Meanwhile, another user identified as Babs wrote: “What makes one a veteran? Longevity or talent or both?
“In this case both young John and Don J are veterans.. And yes young John can go head to head with Don J.. Based on track record..”
Apparently, every fan or music listener would have their own opinions. But what about you? Who do you think is a better producer between Don Jazzy and Young John the wicked producer?
