The contemporary Nigerian music industry has experienced a tangible global recognition that was not feasible hitherto. Apart from the Grammy awards that Nigerian musicians win these days as well as the sold-out concerts they have in different cities in Europe, North America, and Asia, Nigerian music is played in virtually every part of the world. Unlike in the past, when Nigerian songs appealed mainly to Nigerians, Africans, and Nigerians abroad, people from different nationalities love Nigerian songs. However, the Nigerian comedy industry, both skit-making and stand-up comedy, is not making as much impact globally compared to music. Except for the intervention of social media, which most comedians have leveraged to reach wider audiences,.
Perhaps due to the lucrative nature of Nigerian music and how it is soaring across the borders of many nations, most Nigerian comedians have attempted to switch to music as they perceive it to be more profitable. Among the Nigerian comedians who have tried doing music are:
1. Nasboi
Lawal Michael Nasiru Bolaji, professionally known as Nasboi, gained fame for mimicking the music star Davido in his skits, earning him the moniker “low-budget OBO.” Even though Nas Boi tried for many years to become a big deal in the music world, he became famous for making funny videos instead. His hilarious imitation of Davido made him well known. Although he had a tough time making it big in music like he wanted, he finally achieved his dream of making good music with his hit single, “Umbrella,” featuring Wande Coal. The song went viral and gained him fame both at home and abroad.
2. Carter Efe
Oderhohwo Joseph, known as Carter Efe, began his journey as a skit maker in 2019 and later achieved global recognition with his hit song “Machala,” reaching the 14th position on the Afrobeats charts on the US Billboards. Carter Efe has become a notable name in the music scene, with multiple singles and collaborations under his belt.
3. Josh2Funny
Chibuike Joshua Alfred, aka Josh2Funny, dropped a remix of his popular “Don’t Leave Me” challenge with rappers like Vector, Falz, AO, and Magnito in 2020. The skit maker didn’t stop there; he released tracks upon tracks and then an album project titled “Kingdom Boy” in 2022.
