Wizkid’s recent comments about rapper Ladipoe early Monday morning has raised mixed reactions from fans and other social media users including Daniel Regha who thinks that it was by extension, disrespectful to the Mavins record label boss, Collins Ajereh otherwise known as Don Jazzy.
Recall that Wizkid had reportedly engaged in an interactive session with his fans on X on Monday morning.
While several fans asked questions, some made requests and others paid tribute to the Nigerian music superstar. But the “vawulence” syndrome amongst Nigerian folks which soon took over the day has resulted in a controversy for which many have expressed their concerns.
Apparently, for Wizkid’s die-hard fans, it was all a thing of fun but to others, the big bird as he is otherwise called, had engaged in an uncultured act specifically with an indirect jab at Don Jazzy.
The controversy started when a fan reminded Big Wiz on X that Ladipoe, an exquisite and talented rapper signed to the Mavins record label, yesterday, made some unpleasant comments about him.
Without any disclosure of what Ladipoe said and without any confirmation of the allegations, Wizkid swiftly responded the tweep saying that he does not chat with artists signed by an influencer and called for the next report to diss.
“Lol never chatting to anyone signed to an influencer. Next,” the singer replied the tweep who wrote, “Wizkid Ladipo still talk nonsense yesterday o, Abeg enter that one too.”
Obviously, Ladipoe is signed to Don Jazzy’s Mavins record label and so it is apparent Wizkid was referring to Don Jazzy as an influencer not a music executive.
This, many people have considered disrespectful giving that Don Jazzy is one of the early Nigerian afrobeat singers whose impact has made tremendous contributions to the progression and gradual evolution of the Nigerian music industry.
Don Jazzy did not just stop at being a once upon a time singer in the industry. He eventually transited to becoming one of the most revered music producers in the country at a time that he even worked on a project with American A-list rapper and husband to Beyonce, Jay Z.
Ajereh Collins as he is originally known, eventually grew to establish his own record label about a decade ago and has helped in grooming and projecting many young talents in the industry to stardome, including the likes of Tiwa Savage, Korede Bello, Rema, Ayra Starr, Reekado Banks, Magixx, Crayon, Johnny Drille, Dija and several others.
Don Jazzy also owns a music school, Mavins music school where young talents enrol to be refined for their musical journeys.
Built upon this basis and more, popular social media critic and influencer Daniel Regha criticized Wizkid for disrespecting a record label and it’s artists.
Regha reminded Wizkid that he alongside his former boss Banky W are also influencers and that the same record label he disrespects, has groomed some global talents and was responsible for their current statuses unlike him (Wizkid) who needed the help of international artists Drake and Beyonce to get to where he is.
Via a post on X, Regha wrote: “Wizkid was once signed to E.M.E Records whose co-founder Banky W was, & is still a part-time influencer; He also forgets that he himself is an influencer which is why brands use his platform to advertise & promote their products.
“Ayra Starr got a Grammy nomination while signed to MAVINs, REMA is a global sensation while signed to the same label owned by Don Jazzy, but he needed the help of Beyonce as well as Drake (international artistes) to get a career breakthrough. He shouldn’t disrespect record labels or their artistes.”
Regha also shared screenshots of the posts Wizkid made about his latest music release in December 2023 and how it performed poorly on X unlike the video he shared of Davido begging a lady which did a lot better by over a million views.
The social media influencer further captioned it thus:
“When bants start outshining ur actual work/talent, u know there’s an issue of m!splaced priority. No shades.”
