Music producer Dr Roy, has called out famous Nigerian gospel singer Mercy Chinwo, accusing her of not paying his due royalties after working with her on several projects.
Dr Roy expressed his grief while speaking on a recent episode of the honest bunch podcast hosted by popular. Lagos-based on air personality, Nedu Wazobia.
The music producer who broke into tears while narrating his ordeal with the singer and her management said he worked on her “Excess love” project and other tracks for 22 hours straight for days and didn’t get his royalties.
He said, “we sleep by 5 a.m., wake up by 7 a.m., and start working until 5 a.m.”
According to him, even while his father had stroke and he reached out to the singer for support, all she said was that “he’ll be fine.”
The singer decried all his efforts and expectations to make a living off the multiple projects he worked on with Mercy Chinwo going to waste with nothing to show for it.
He said, “My father is not feeling too well; if you have anything you can assist me with, just assist me so I can take care of my father.” But he said all she told him was, “don’t worry, he will be fine.”
Reacting on Twitter, Verified Homie questioned the integrity of the claims laid on the singer by Dr Roy while cautioning that both the singer and her husband would not hesitate to take up legal actions against him if the claims do not have substantial evidence.
He wrote, “This allegation is strong I hope he has a good lawyer because Mercy Chinwo and her husband love to sue.
But my question is was he paid for the production if he was paid he should go and sit down.”
Another user, Osinachi wrote, “Religious people! They’re always preaching and singing what they can’t practice.”
Mercy Chinwo who was formally signed to EeZee Conceptz in 2017 released her hit single “Excess Love” in 2018, paving the way for her global publicity and recognition due to the high level of acceptance the single received from her then, teaming fans and gospel music lovers across the globe.
Dr. Roy debunk claims, says he was not calling out Mercy Chinwo
Meanwhile, emerging reports have seen the teary music producer debunk claims that he called out Mercy Chinwo over unpaid royalties.
In a new video circulating online, the music producer said that he was not calling out Mercy Chinwo but EeZee Tee who is the owner of EeZee concept.”
According to him, Mercy Chinwo was the one who stood by him during his trial moments. He also stated that the singer suffered the same fate as he did noting that she was also not paid some of her royalties at a time.
However, this has equally raised concerns over the integrity of music creatives keeping their bargain and the structure of the Nigerian music industry.
President Eniola sharing his thoughts on the matter wrote in part:
“While we haven’t heard from Eezee Tee himself but I had a conversation with the Founder of Ten Strings Music Institute and listening to that, I can’t but feel for people and how Nigeria as a country is losing.
“Nigeria music industry remains unstructured…
“The Nigeria music industry produces rich monsters. An artiste gets N10 million and expend N3 million so, what happened to the N7 million???
“They live large and fat but people working with them are in penury.”
