Famous Nigerian singer, Simisola Kosoko popularly known as Simi, has said that women still support women in the entertainment industry.
Simi stated this during a recent conversation with African Folder Magazine. According to her, women, though many times unnoticed, often make significant contributions to the success of their fellow women striving to succeed in the industry.
Simi who referred to the already established female artists in the industry as ‘old cats,’ said there were some women who also paved the way for her in the entertainment industry.
She acknowledged the sacrifices of those who helped her while advancing for the status quo to be changed and for the creation of equal opportunities for female performers.
The singer however, refused to take undue credit as she insisted that various pioneers in the industry had laid a blueprint prior to her emergence to stardome and insisted that their hardwork be recognized by all means.
Simi further appreciated the advantages that come from the labour of the women who came before her.
She said: “There are women who have worked hard to damn the status quo. So, I won’t give myself much credit because I also benefited from other women who came before me.”
Simi is one of Nigeria’s finest female exports in the music industry. She has managed to remain relevant for over a decade and still presents herself and her art as one that does not wish to be gone any time soon.
Her debut gospel album “Ogaju” which was released in 2008 had reportedly marked the commencement of a professional music career for the singer who did not relent in her effort towards success until in 2014 when she defied the odds and rose to stardome in the Nigerian music scene with the release of one of her earliest chart-topping singles, “Tiff.”
Simi’s musical prowess was upon Tiff’s release, noticed more than it ever was. This is evident in the huge success the singer recorded with the release of the song which also got nominated for Best Alternative Song at The Headies in 2015.
It is believed that the singer’s nomination at the Headies spurred her to put in more effort into her craft while utilizing the many opportunities that came her way to her own advantage. These have undoubtedly led the singer to her current ranking in the industry.
Her discography includes four studio albums, two EPs and several other songs with both local and international artists where she starred as the lead artist in majority of her collaborations.
Simi had reportedly sparked controversy in the music scene once, when she announced her marriage with Adekunle Gold, a fellow Nigerian entertainer, afrobeat singer and songwriter.
Indeed, no one saw Simi’s marriage to Adekunle Gold coming as most fans suspected an affair between the songstress and Nigerian rapper Falz, due to their multiple collaborations and public display of affection though they had some time ago. These suspicions and claims by fans however, never had any substantial evidence to prove that they were being intimate.
Simi is currently married to Adekunle Gold and the couple are blessed with a little princess Dija.
